In Tamilnadu at Sri Mahalaxmi temple coconuts were broken on the heads of devotees as a part of ritual. As part of the preliminaries of this annual festival, held on the 19th day of Tamil month Aadi, holy water was brought in a procession from the Cauvery and special prayers were conducted on Friday morning.
The ritual is performed for the fulfillment of vow. Surprisingly the devotees don not feel pain in the act.
